FAIRMONT -- One person has been cited for his involvement in an accident that slowed traffic on Interstate 79 for hours on Wednesday night.
Kenneth Peter James Cummings II of Clarksburg pulled over to change the tire on his Kia Spectra near the South Fairmont exit, and another man stopped to help him, according to Cpl. M. R. Camden.
A tractor-trailer coming around the bend saw the men, and attempted to swerve to avoid them, troopers at the scene said.
As it swerved, the semi’s driver, Anthony Lewis Makela Jr., of Minnesota, over corrected, causing him to rear-end an SUV and flip the truck on its side, stated Camden.
Cummings told Camden that the last thing he remembered was putting the jack under his car.
Cummings saw the SUV lose control and begin to slide, then noticed the tractor trailer do the same, Camden said.
The SUV pinned Cummings to his car, and he was taken via Healthnet to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, according to Camden.
Cummings is listed in good condition, hospital officials said.
Camden cited Makela for failure to maintain control, and issued driving on a suspended license and failure to provide proof of insurance tickets to Cummings.
The accident happened at about 3 p.m.
The roadway was down to one lane for hours, as crews worked to unload the 33,000 pounds of the sweetener Splenda the tractor trailer was carrying.
It took two tow companies, Hillbilly Towing and Summers Towing, to remove the truck from the roadway, stated Camden.
