AMSTERDAM, Ohio -- Deputies found garbage wall to wall inside the Amsterdam home and now one parent is facing charges.

The 10-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy are in the care of a foster parent tonight and the father is facing a charge of child endangerment.

Sheriff Fred Abdalla said me he did not arrest the mother because she is pregnant with the couples third child.

"I told the parent you want live like pigs, live like pigs, but these kids don't have a choice to live in filth.. It's not right," said Sheriff Abdalla.

Cigarettes butts were sprawled throughout the house, rat traps placed in the kitchen, and a sink overflowing with dishes.

That's just some of the things Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said he found when he went to the Amsterdam home, after a tip from a neighbor, just days before Christmas.

Sheriff Abdalla said the parents saw no problem with the conditions

"The grandfather was there too and i asked him twice how can you let you're grandchildren live in this filth? He just shrugged his shoulders, I couldn't believe it, I've seen worse but this is in my top five," said Sheriff Abdalla.

Sheriff Abdalla said neither parents work, but take in more than$2,000 a month.

The sheriff said his heart was broken and if it wasn't for a concerned neighbor the children wouldn't have had a Christmas.

"If you know children are living in condtions like this, call us... let us know, this is abuse. If you think it's not you're problem, well, you are just as guilty as them," said Sheriff Abdalla.

The sheriff said he'll make sure the kids never call a house like that home again. The sheriff provided gift cards so the children could have some Christmas presents and the fosters parents are providing a warm bed.

He would not release the name of the father to protect the identity of the children.

I can't believe people want to live this way, let alone make kids live it too. According to the article, money isn't even the issue. I am all for families getting funds to live on, but give the kids a good life. There is more of this going on in the area than you realize. I have a tip for the social workers. If you go past a house and the porch is junked up and the yard is junked up, you can bet the house is a disgrace. I applaud the neighbors for turning these people in, and more people should take an interest in the welfare of the area children.
