ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- Authorities say Belmont County has been hit with a rash of vehicle entries and thefts.

In the past three weeks, the thieves have hit Shadyside, Bellaire, Pinch Run, Winding Hill, Bannock and the Route 214 area.

Sheriff Fred Thompson says they are taking everything from loose change to CDs to registration cards.

He urges people to take all their belongings out of their cars and to lock their cars as well.

"We're encouraging people to lock their vehicles," said the sheriff. "These people are not breaking into vehicles. They're just trying the door handle and if it's unlocked, they'll reach in and grab whatever they can."

He says this type of crime often increases around the holidays, with people wanting anything they can convert to cash.

referring to the semi/ lawn tractor incident in bannock,oh. very tragic that happened to the driver of the mower , but just think of the truck driver... the old gas station in bannock located up the street from this accident has the mower on display in full view of the public , with a big sign on it addressed to the driver of the semi that struck david eddy. the sign reads "way to go turbo" the truck driver. i realize the owner of the station was a friend of the deceased, as thats probably where he was headed when the accident occured which is where he would go on his mower to visit his friends. but that is not respectful to the deceased or to the driver of the semi.i knew them both and i can honestly say that that attitude is not fair to the two involved and especially the families of both men.it was an accident and not intentional..out of respect the display needs to be removed. have a heart as well as the christmas spirit.

Well, the best thing that can convert to cash, AND it's legal, is W-O-R-K!! I am so sick of people having to take extra precautions because of low lifes like this. I say if they are caught in your vehicle, unlocked or otherwise, you have the right to take care of it yourself because if you wait on assistance, a.k.a. police, the perp will be long gone and never be caught. At least I would have a tooth and some hair to give to police for DNA. :)
