HUNTINGTON -- A Milton, West Virginia man is recovering after he was involved in a shooting with bank robbery suspects, while serving as a senior police officer in Colorado.
Witnesses who saw the gun fight between authorities and two suspected bank robbers, hope they never have to witness anything like it again.
"It was horrible to see, it was really hard to see, and I hope I never have to see something like that again in my life. It just, the shots didn't sop and the commotion didn't stop and it was horrible," one witness cried.
During the fight, two Westminster Police officers were shot. Milton native Sean Chandler was one of the officers.
"I got a call from my daughter-in-law's mother, um, and the first thing she said is, the first thing I wanted to tell you, is Sean's okay, um, but that he was shot," said Adell Chandler, Sean's mother.
But, his mother says he was more than prepared, and the time spent in Cabell County starting his career, is to thank.
Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas and Sean became close when Chandler was a young sheriff's deputy.
"I've been able and fortunate enough to talk to him this morning when he was talking with his mother Adell, and he recounted the events that took place, and he's the same on Sean. It made me feel good to know that he's emotionally all right after this incident, as well as being physically all right," said Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas.
As the holidays inch closer, Adell is counting her blessings.
"Don't know when he'll get to come home, but we have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, and um, pretty shook up today, but I know he's gonna be okay, and we just thank the Lord that he will," Adelle said.
Adell plans to travel to Colorado soon to check on Sean.
It sounds like they'll have him up and taking a few steps tomorrow, as he starts the long recovery process.
