WHEELING -- Three local police departments are receiving high praise after being awarded AAA Platinum Awards from AAA East Central, a nonprofit organization that provided highway safety programs across the state of West Virginia.

The Wheeling and New Martinsville police departments, and West Virginia State Police Troop 1-Wheeling were named platinum winners for their leadership in safety and enforcement efforts.

Gold Awards were given to the Weirton Police Department, Marshall, Ohio, Wetzel and Brooke county sheriff’s departments, and West Virginia State Police Troop 1-Moundsville.

Silver Awards were given to Cameron, Moundsville, and McMechen police, and Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

To be eligible for the awards, the departments must conduct traffic safety promotions and educate the public on safety topics.
