MORGANTOWN -- It was 20 years ago today that the people of Germany tore down the Berlin Wall. West Virginia University students tore down a wall of their own Monday to celebrate.
First the students climbed over the wall, much as several East Germans did in 1989.
Then they took turns swinging at the graffiti covered replica.
The WVU German Club and History Club worked together to build the wall and commemorate the event.
"I think it’s important to celebrate this because the wall, I think, is regarded as a symbol of oppression and it's nice to see people gaining their freedoms again," said WVU German Club President Amber Lane.
The students destroyed the symbolic Berlin Wall in less than an hour.
