CHARLESTON --  West Virginia's highway maintenance budget will be cut before the end of this fiscal year due to decreasing road funds.

Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox said collections of gasoline taxes, registration fees and the privilege tax paid on vehicle purchases are way down. And, he doesn't see any relief in sight.

The $11 million shortfall, or 1 percent of the DOH budget, will mean cuts in the highway maintenance budget.

Resurfacing projects across the state will likely be affected beginning next spring. The cuts would not impact projects funded by the federal economic stimulus package.

WVDOH does not maintain turnpikes or receive revenues from them. Gas tax, registration fees, and privilege taxes are the primary sources of income for WVDOH. They do not receive the funds collected from overweight truck tickets or any county property taxes. When the variable portion of the gas tax was taken away it made a huge dent in revenues. Look up this phrase in google: variable part of gas tax west virginia, then click on the 6th link down titled dropping variable gas tax.
