WHEELING -- The red brick building on National Road in downtown Elm Grove was discovered in flames at about 10 a.m.

It houses the S. White & Sons Co. and an empty storefront on the first floor, and apartments on the next two floors.

Residents all got out, although Amber Snider said her three cats are still unaccounted for.

The fire apparently started in another apartment.

Snider said when she awoke, she didn't realize there was a fire.

She said there was no smoke in her apartment, nor were there any smoke detectors.

But she said once she opened her door to the hall, it was filled with smoke, and the screams of the other tenants.

Another tenant, Brad "Biff" Leonard, said the Wheeling Fire Department did a good job of responding quickly.

He said his belongings are lost, but he said at least all the residents got out safely.

At 10:55 a.m., just as it appeared to be under control, it flashed out again.

Repeated honks on the fire trucks alerted the firefighters to the "Everybody Out" signal.

Flames re-ignited and black smoke replaced the light brown smoke, pouring into the sky.

The Wheeling Fire Department's huge ladder truck and the Regional Response Trailer have been pressed into service.
