SALEM -- The first time Emily Dulaney visited Fort New Salem was for a ghost tour when she was young. "I got scared, haha," said Dulaney.
Now she visits with her service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, to help spruce up the historic village so it can host events like ghost tours again.
"We're going to be cleaning sidewalks and digging out the front of the doors so we can start laying new brick," she said.
The Fort New Salem Foundation holds these Volunteer Days regularly to help bring the Fort back from disuse.
"We're a 501(c) 3, and our mission is to restore and reopen," said Chairman Joseph Audia.
Audia says some major work has been done at the Fort, including drain work so water runs away from the cabins.
The Blacksmith Shop has also been expanded.
"What we hope to be is a major player in Heritage tourism industry for North Central West Virginia which Fort New Salem was," said Audia. "We want to be able to teach what it was like to be on the frontier as our country was expanding and people can see a glimpse of what life used to be."
The Foundation says it hopes to have the renovations complete for special events in December.
