Funeral arrangements nearly complete for Patrolman Jones.

CHARLESTON -- Charleston Major Danny Jones is confirming that the investigation involving the shooting of Patrolman Jerry Jones was a result of "friendly fire," meaning he was accidentally shot by one of his fellow officers.

Jones was pronounced dead Sunday morning after a police chase and a shootout with a man police identified as Brian Scott Good, 31, of Slack’s Trailer Court in Miliken.

Good was also killed in the gunfire. Mayor Jones also confirmed to WOWKTV.com that he was unarmed.

The investigation has continued all Sunday. Detectives have listed to testimony from the officers on the scene, and viewed dash cam video. The video, which will not be shown to the public shows Good ramming his truck into police cruisers when he was cornered. It also apparently shows officer Jones and the suspect shot.

As a result all five officers that were on the scene are on paid administrative leave as a part of department policy. Three of the officers were on the scene with Patrolman Jones, two others arrived after he and the Good were shot.

Arrangements are nearly complete for remembering the life and honoring the service of Patrolman Jones. Visitation will be held from 5 p. m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 and the memorial service will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Sept.16.

Both visitation and the memorial service will be at Municipal Auditorium on Virginia Street in Charleston.

ORIGINAL STORY

A Charleston Police officer was shot and killed early Sunday morning.

According to Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster, Patrolman Jerry Jones, 27 years old, was killed in the line of duty while pursuing a suspect in the Quick area of Pinch. That is outside the Charleston city limits.

The suspect being chased died at the scene. The name of the suspect has not yet been released.

"He and a couple other officers had been involved with the suspect in this case," Webster said. "He (the suspect) had been involved in a few incidents in the city with his vehicle, some hit and runs."

Patrolman Jerry Jones was pronounced dead at CAMC General later on this morning.

"We lost a very fine officer. He worked hard for us," Webster said. "You know it can happen but you never think it will."

Chief Webster said that Jones just celebrated his third anniversary with the department three days ago.

According to Charleston Mayor Danny Jones, Patrolman Jones served four years in the Marine Corps and was a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Webster says grief counselors and chaplains are currently talking to Jones' fellow police officers.

"Probably more than half of the department was at the hospital if not all of us," Webster said. "Jerry is a hero in our eyes and I'm sure he will be to everybody. He did his job well and we just want to honor and cherish him."

Jones was recently married. Webster says the department will now be coming together to support each other and Jones' loved ones. "We want to help the family through it because they'll never be able to get over it," Webster said. "They lost a loved one and we feel like we have too, but for them its a child, a husband."

The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department is investigating because the shooting took place outside of the city. The Charleston Police Department will also do an internal investigation.

Webster says the family is planning a funeral with military and police honors.

My heart goes out to the friends and family of this brave man. For his new bride, his Mother and Father, Brothers/Sisters. What a great emptiness they all must be feeling at this time. I just hope that if they should happen to read the comments posted on here, they feel the love, thoughts and prayers that West Virginia offers them in their time of sadness.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family from the Police Force as well. These men share a bond like no other. They risk their lives every day to keep us, the public, safe. They are their own family and I feel it to be harsh to post judgement. Regardless of the incident, I can guarantee that the involved person will prosecute himself harder than anyone else will. Though he was doing a duty for the public, he will be the one suffering in the end. My heart goes out to him.

I notice that people are ready to prosecute and throw stones when an incident like this occurs, whether it be with the Police Force (City, County, State), the Fire Department, the local Ambulance Services.... however their courage and duties are not recognized on a daily basis as they should be. Unfortunately incidences like this occur and while many will suffer the loss of Officer Jones; we can't take away the fact that these men were doing their duty. It's hard to tell how many innocent people would have lost their lives if the officer had chosen not to fire. The driver was out of control and needed to be stopped. It's very unfortunate that a life was lost, but knowing the dedication and honor that Officer Jones had (as many officers), it was his pledge to keep his community safe. He gave his life to keep his community safe. Let's not take that away from him and continue to prosecute the men who stood in his same shoes. Allow Officer Jones to have his moment of glory; and allow those who loved him to grieve without ridicule and persecution. I love my men/women who's duty it is to keep me safe.

My comments were aimed at the newspaper. To call this a "shootout" is a sad stretch. Of course it is a sad day for everyone involved. The young man who lost his life gave more than his fair share to all of us, and it sounds like he was a much loved man. He didn't deserve to be killed in this fashion, is what I'm saying, especially after all he survived before. Deadly force is used too often, too recklessly and is not justified just because it was "the boys in blue".

I apologize for any offense. It just seems such a waste :(

My thoughts and prayers go out to Samantha and Beverly and Jerry and all of his family. I went to school with him and he was one of the nicest people that i knew. He was one of those people, no matter how long it had been since you had seen him, he made you feel like you were one of his best friends. It breaks my heart for his family. This is a situation this is so hard to hear about, but God had a purpose that we may not understand.

First and foremost, I and my family's prayers & condolences go out to Ptl. Jones' family and friends. Next, ourprayers & sympathy go out to the officer whose shot struck Ptl. Jones. his life may well be a shambles long as he lives. Next, our prayers & condolences go out to the perp's family. We shouldn't blame them for HIS actions. Next, as a former cop & navy vet, I HATE the term "friendly fire"! Friendly fire...ISN'T! Next, I'm sicka hearing this "unarmed perp" garbage! A truck, deliberately driven into another occupied vehicle, is almost as deadly a weapon as a gun. How many people have been killed by similar acts? I feel no sympathy for the perp. He created the whose situation by HIS OWN actions! And those who think a cop can routinely flatten tires with gunshots has watched too many movies! I fired two 30.06 rounds into an old inflated steel-belted radial tire's tread, which is usually the only parta the tire that a pursuing cop would see, without flattening it. And a 30.06 rifle is considerably more powerful than the cops' usual armament. THE COPS HAD EVERY RIGHT TO STOP THAT PERP BY ANY MEANS POSSIBLE! By deliberately ramming the fuzzcans, he was using deadly force against the cops, simple as that!

To explain what kind of man Jerry was is no easy task. I have not spoken with him in years, and tears fill my eyes as I write. I was Jerry's fireteam leader in our first duty station in Camp Lejeune. We were 18 and just out of high school. I remember his laugh, what a funny guy. I knew lots of men in the Corps that fell short of living up to its legacy, but Jerry was an exemplary Marine. The world is better for having known Jerry, and I know Heaven is a little safer from Hell's army with Jerry on the wall. Your family is in my prayers Jerry, I miss you and love you.

It would be wise to remember that as a US Marine, this man of honor, fought for your rights. One of those rights was free speech. We all have rights. Those rights come with responsibilities. Exercising those rights in an irresponsible manner has consequences. Whatever your opinion may be, albeit formed without all the information yet, is insensitive, rude, and cruel. It should be common sense to not be posting negative things about a dead officer or his brothers in an accident just hours after his death! Do you not think about the family or friends who will read it when you post something nasty? I only post now to try to spare my very close friend further pain that has been caused her; She is grateful for the prayers, however. When in doubt remember what your mother taught you, “Think before you speak” and “if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all!” God Speed Officer Jones…We will see you guarding heavens gates Marine! Semper Fi!

I just want to say I am very sorry to hear of the loss of this police officers life. People say that when your a cop or a cops wife you know that it could happen. But it should never happen. I never knew this young man but I want to say thank you for standing up for Americans in the Marines and being a cop and protecting the good citizens rights. God bless the family. West Virginia Loves you and is very Thankful for your service.
