Good was also killed in the gunfire. Mayor Jones also confirmed to WOWKTV.com that he was unarmed.

ORIGINAL STORY
A Charleston Police officer was shot and killed early Sunday morning.
According to Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster, Patrolman Jerry Jones, 27 years old, was killed in the line of duty while pursuing a suspect in the Quick area of Pinch. That is outside the Charleston city limits.
The suspect being chased died at the scene. The name of the suspect has not yet been released.
"He and a couple other officers had been involved with the suspect in this case," Webster said. "He (the suspect) had been involved in a few incidents in the city with his vehicle, some hit and runs."
Patrolman Jerry Jones was pronounced dead at CAMC General later on this morning.
"We lost a very fine officer. He worked hard for us," Webster said. "You know it can happen but you never think it will."
Chief Webster said that Jones just celebrated his third anniversary with the department three days ago.
According to Charleston Mayor Danny Jones, Patrolman Jones served four years in the Marine Corps and was a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Webster says grief counselors and chaplains are currently talking to Jones' fellow police officers.
"Probably more than half of the department was at the hospital if not all of us," Webster said. "Jerry is a hero in our eyes and I'm sure he will be to everybody. He did his job well and we just want to honor and cherish him."
Jones was recently married. Webster says the department will now be coming together to support each other and Jones' loved ones. "We want to help the family through it because they'll never be able to get over it," Webster said. "They lost a loved one and we feel like we have too, but for them its a child, a husband."
The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department is investigating because the shooting took place outside of the city. The Charleston Police Department will also do an internal investigation.
Webster says the family is planning a funeral with military and police honors.
