State Department of Education says schools must give students those supplies that are integral and fundamental to classroom instruction.
Story by Kimberly Beary
CHARLESTON -- Thirteen days before the first day of school, the West Virginia State Board of Education said all schools must provide integral and fundamental supplies needed for instruction.
Yet several parents of students from different schools around Kanawha County said they received "must-have" supply lists.
So what's a parent to do?
Kanawha County Superintendent Dr. Ron Duerring said the suggestion lists comply with the state's guidelines, but parents are not required to purchase the items.
"I don't know one teacher that, if a child didn't have paper or pencils, that they wouldn't provide it to provide a quality education and certainly not make fun of them for it. That's not what we do here. We are here for our children," Duerring said.
Duerring adds parents are not required to purchase the suggested items.
